Aaron Ginsburg

Our ZOOM Program for June 11, 2023

Aaron Ginsburg first reunited a family separated by the Holocaust in 2007. In addition to the Shoah families THAT may be separated by the passage of time or by geography, families are often unaware that they had relatives on the other side of the Atlantic. American families  are often less connected to the past while on the Russian side, families are obsessed by the stories that they could not share before the breakup of Soviet Union. Using multiple examples, Aaron will demonstrate the process and will share the excitement at the moment of discovery.

Our Speaker

I was born in Newport, Rhode Island, My mother's parents were born in Horodyshche, Cherkassy Oblast Ukraine (Pokrassa) and Hnativka, Kyiv Oblast, Ukraine(Kahanovksy), Ukraine, and settled in Fall River, Massachusetts and Pawtucket, Rhode Island, respectively. My father was born near Dokshitsy, Belarus. His parents were born in Hlybokaye, glubok in Yiddish (Ginsburg) and Uskrimie(Kusinitz), a village near Bgoml, Belarus and settled in Newport. I've organized family and shtetl reunions, found family in Minsk, helped restore a Jewish cemetery in Belarus, created a site for all Pokrassa families yousaypokrassa.org, co-founded The Friends of Jewish Dokshitsy Jewishdokshitsy.org, frequently visited Belarus, Ukraine, and Israel, reunited numerous families,  written articles for the Boston Jewish Advocate, MASS-POCHA, the newsletter of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Boston (JGSGB), and Jewish Rhode Island  and spoken about genealogy at JGSGB and annual conventions of the IAJGS and elsewhere. My Newport and Fall River Jewish blog/facebook groups help people learn about their history. I look forward to meeting you.
